The principle of self-government, when applied to the family unit, is known as family government. The children are the God-given property of the parents. As such, it is the parents alone – unless they have shown wanton, reckless disregard for that right and the safety of their children – who have the right to make the decisions they deem best for their children.
This principle is why, in Oklahoma, parents have the right to choose how to educate their children, whether it be public, private, or homeschool. It is why, in Oklahoma, parents have the right to make the decisions they deem best for their child’s medical care, whether they choose to vaccinate fully, partially, or not at all. These basic rights were not given to us by the state or local government. They were given to us by God. The state and city’s only role is to ensure that no laws are passed which would infringe upon those rights.
